At America World we do a morning devotional every morning at 9 a.m. This morning we read from a sermon that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave the day before he was assassinated. In this sermon, he encouraged his listeners to, “develop a kind of dangerous unselfishness,” like the Good Samaritan, who in Dr. King’s words, “..decided not to be compassionate by proxy… and be concerned about his brother.” We recognize that the Civil Rights Movement and the work of Dr. King (and countless others) is part of the reason our society has changed so dramatically in the last few decades in regards to racial relations.
We are glad our nation has set aside a day to honor the man who said:
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
Many adoptive families are closer to realizing this “dream” thanks to Dr. King’s work. Many of the families that work with our agency have adopted children of a different ethnic background and many families self-describe as being “multi-racial”. These families are much more accepted in our culture thanks to the women and men who bravely fought against slavery, bigotry, separation and discrimination.
AMEN!! Today our family of 3 nations and 3 backgrounds celebrate HIS dream. That dream, gave HOPE and POSSIBILITY to ours!
